It is well known that Toyotomi Hideyoshi had brought great damage to the Korea during the Japanese invasion to Korea in 1592. In Korea, however, it has not been introduced enough about his life story or the meaning of his roll in Japanese history.
In the middle of the nineteenth century, the new Meiji government estimated his achievement highly and restored his shrine.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi became popular especially through the Sino-Japanese War, because the government accomplished Hideyoshi's failure of invasion to Korea at 300 years ago. Until the surrender of Japan in 1945, he had been the most popular hero.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi is important to understand unification process of Japan in the late sixteenth century, what is more, in Edo periods. It can be said that there are many studies about his biography in Edo period. Still, there are few studies of how Toyotomi Hideyoshi has been appreciated since modern period in Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi was considered more important in modern periods compared to Edo periods.
In this paper, I want to survey Japanese consciousness about Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his invasion of Korea thoroughly. Various media would be examined such as songs, plays, festivals, not to speak of literary works. Since modern period, Japanese consciousness about him has been changed by several times. That is the Sino-Japanese War, the invasion of the continent, and the Pacific War.
After the Sino-Japanese War and Three Hundred Yerar's Anniversary of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Death (豊臣秀吉三百年祭), The image of Toyotomi Hideyoshi has been ‘invented' as a character who is a devoted retainer of the Emperor of Japan, and the best model of humanity and greatness. This image has been engraved on Japanese people through educations, movies, plays, novels, and so on.
Moreover, due to the Japanese invasion to the South East Asia and the invasion to the continent after 1930s, his image changed from a pioneer of the invasion of Korea, to that of the continent and the South.
It is necessary to understand accurately that the historical remains of Toyotomi Hideyoshi have been restored too exaggeratively.
