Roin was one of the kidnapped in the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, who escaped from Japan after 19 months of detention. He considered Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the central figure of the war, as lower class man, and thought the Japan was in mess by his reign. While he gave an accurate description about how Hideyoshi had seized the power and how he died, he showed also an misunderstanding about Japanese family name system. Considered to the question of Tsushima, Roin knew perfectly the problem of this island for both Korea and Japan, but pointed out Tsushima was under the Japanese influence. But to pay Japan back for the invasion, he argued to keep a hold of the island as a spy. I think this perspective shows the influence of beonbyeong(藩屛) in Korea. He, based on the theory of the civilized and the barbarians considered Japanese as barbarian enemy. He thought that Japanese retreat as a strategic withdrawal, and Hideyoshi gave the power to Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was so convinced of Japanese re-invasion that he opposed to the resumption of diplomatic relationship. Escaped before the beginning of reign of Ieyasu, he possibly could not know the situation of Japan. In this regard, the information given by him had a lot of deficiency. Among the kidnapped, there were some Koreans who changed their perception of Japan. But not Roin. For him, Japan was the object of vengeance. His experience of kidnapping, with parents and two sons lost by the war, would have a certain impact. Furthermore the confucian view of Ye theory fortified his foreign policy view by which China must be respected and Barbarians repelled.
