The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanism of the custom of vindication and the culture of honoring after death honor for the political criminals in Chos?n Dynasty. And the method for this study is to analyze the cases of the conspirators for the restoration of King Danjong(端宗)
There were four different levels in the custom of the vindication and the culture of the after-death honor of the conspirators for the restoration of King Danjong - the level of the king, the level of the officials' and scholars' public debates(公論), the level of the sub-lineage(門中), and the level of the enlightenment of the subjects.
The king attempted to show off his authority by leading the vindication and after-death honor. This kind of attempt by the king was based on the public debates of the officials and scholars. The officials attempted, through their public debates, to find and cultivate their mentality necessary for the politics of the factions. The sub-lineage raised these issues endlessly to derive recognition of their ancestors' deeds from the public debates. They attempted to strengthen their own unity and obtain their social status by reconfirming or heightening the cultural authority of their ancestors. And the enlightenment of the subjects by the vindication and after-death honor through the king's intention, the officials' and scholars' debates and the sub-lineage's efforts, could finally bring long-range survival and security to Chos?n Dynasty.
