This study examines how the conflicting ideological positions of two countries' news media are reflected in different perceptions about the postwar Iraqi situation and encoded in discursive patterns in relation to cognitive and socio-political aspects of the media. The major aim of this study is to show that a comparative analysis of news reports on postwar Iraq from different networks reaffirms different choices and practices in the news representations of each network's ideology. The data of this study are collected from the on-line news reports posted on the Web sites of the two networks, Fox News Channel in the U.S. (FoxNews.com) and Al-Jazeera in Qatar (Aljazeera.net English), during the target period of 18-22 March, 2006. This study adopts a multidisciplinary theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics and Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory, in order to investigate the discursive functions and strategies of metaphors and metonymies. As a result, this study confirms that ideological differences between different countries' networks must result in different perceptions about postwar Iraq in their respective news reports. Simultaneously, it is also confirmed that such perceptions are represented in the ideologically based choices and practices of news texts, keeping with the separating line between Self and Other according to each network's social and cultural identity and ideology, Al-Jazeera in the Arab and the Third world but Fox News in the U.S. and the West.
