In discourse analysis of news discourse, language plays a pivotal role in making ideologies and perspectives more explicit and salient, This is based on the assumption that media discourse represents ideology as well as a set of facts. This paper shows how language shapes news discourse, based on the news texts of the 2013 U.S. federal government shutdown. We analyzed linguistic features of news texts in the New York Times and Yonhap News, on the basis of the result from a thematic approach and a key word approach. The American newspaper heavily reported how it affected Americans financially and economically, while the Korean media outlet focused on the effects on Korea`s economy and financial market. Thus, we strongly claim that language represents different ideologies embedded in news texts for the same news event. The ideological differences were statistically proved to be significant.
