The very first gas engine to be launched by a Korean company onto the world market is now coming from Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI). This is an economic and environmentally-friendly solution to the demand, especially in Asia, to make energy sources, other than oil, available to satisfy the increased demand for power. This HiMSEN H17/24G, open chamber, spark ignited gas engine, which is about to enter its development phase, is described in the paper. The engine has an initial competitive target performance of 20bar, BMEP, at 1200 rev/min, and a low NOx emission of 50 ppm at 13% oxygen, together with an effective thermal efficiency of 42%. The paper shows how attention is focused, not only on the combustion development, but also on the engine control strategy and concept, because these two are the keys to achieving the performance targets, along with their liability and response to load changes, demanded by the operator.
Features and details of this new engine design will be described in the paper. Illustrations and diagrams will show these features as well as the details of the engine control system. Furthermore results of the combustion development will be presented to show how the engine will meet the challenges presented by developing spark ignited open chamber engines with very high efficiency and low emissions for the world market.
