In his whole works, Joyce criticizes British imperialism and especially British rule over Ireland. However, Joyce’s main intention is to criticize not the imperialistic attitudes of the British colonizer, but the attitudes of the colonized to their own people. It is evident that Ireland collapsed economically and was frustrated politically by British imperialism, but paradoxically imperialism has become the Irish people’s strategy to live on during their life of distress. In “Two Gallants,” Corley, the colonized subject, is the character who follows British imperialism, and by using it dominates and exploits other colonized subjects in Ireland. Lenehan, Corley’s “disciple,” is a character who wants to become a second Corley. Though Corley and Lenehan are the colonized subjects still suppressed by colonial rule, they do not recognize their colonized and devastated circumstances, but do they make a frantic attempt to exploit their own people. Finally Joyce concludes that the vulgar imperialism they live by is the cause of their spiritual and moral paralysis.
