There are pairs of verbal expressions which can be generalized in the following way: [verb+object] and [verb+preposition+object]. In the first expression, the verb is immediately followed by the object, whereas in the second expression, the verb is followed by a preposition, which in tum is followed by the object. These patterns are very productive as can be seen in the following representative examples:
(1) a. He caught the straw. b. He caught at the straw.
(2) a. They fought us. b. They fought with us.
In the traditional grammar, the semantic difference between the two expressions were not seriously studied and even in the pedagogical grammars, the difference is simply ignored. The purpose of this paper is to hypothesize that the formal difference (the absence or presence of the preposition) carries clear semantic consequence: the effect of the form is to indicate the impact of the action denoted by the verb. When the object immediately follows the verb, it is directly and totally affected, whereas when the object follows the preposition, it is indirectly and partially affected by the action denoted by the verb. The present paper supports Lakoff's following metaphor: The closer the form indicating causation is to the form indicating the effect, the stronger the causal link is.
