The purpose of this study is to explore meaning differences according to the presence and non-presence of a preposition in some verbs, and to relate the aspects of meaning differences to the principles of iconicity. The results are as follows: First, expressions with the preposition of time position, time frequency, or time duration signify formality, while those without it mean informality. This follows the iconic principle of quantity, especially that of politeness, “Being polite is saying a bit more”. Second, in case of the strength of effect, the quantity of endeavor, directness, and conation, the expressions with the preposition signify a stronger effect, more endeavor, more directness, and the achievement of an action, whereas those without it reveal the opposite meanings. This relates to the following iconic principle of distance: “If the meaning of form A affects the meaning of form B, then the closer form A is to form B, the stronger will be the effect of the meaning of A on the meaning of B.”
