The bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) has been proposed as a convenient, valid approach to estimate body composition in normal, healthy people. The purposes of this study were to develop a convenient, useful equation that would sufficiently predict body composition and to compare the accuracy of four methods to assess body com-position of adult men. The participants were 196 Korean men aged 17-60 years (height 174.0±6.0 ㎝, body weight 71.0±10.6 ㎏; means±sd). Percentage body fat based on underwater weighing technique (UW) was used as the criterion for validity. To construct prediction equations for fat-free mass (FFM), we used multiple regression analysis, whereby all possible combinations were examined. The linear multiple regression equation constructed for predicting the FFM was, for instance, FFM = 29.60 + 0.00355*(BWㆍHt²/R) - 0.220*age + 0.281*BW, where, BW = body weight (㎏), Ht:body height (㎝), R = impedance (ohms). Three equations developed in the present study were then cross-validated in different sample (n = 26) of men. The results indicate that the above equation had the lowest SEE (2.3 ㎏). The FFM calculated using the new equations did not differ from that based on the UW method. In conclusion, the prediction equations in this study afford accurate and inexpensive means of estimating FFM in Korean adult men without having them remove their clothing.
