Effects of mechanical massage on abdominal fat reduction have not been intensively investigated. This study attempts to evaluate the effects of mechanical massage on abdominal adipose tissue reduction in obese women. Twenty two obese females were randomly assigned to either a control group (CON; n = 11, age 37.2±13.7 yrs, body fat 38.9±7.5%, VO2max 30.4±5.5 ml/kg/min) or an experimental group (EX; n = 11, age 40.7±10.9 yrs, % body fat 40.2±6.7%, VO2max 27.0±5.3 ml/kg/min) and completed 18 treatments. Subjects of Both groups participated in a jazz dance program that consisted of three times a week, 30 min per a session for 6 weeks. Only the difference between groups was using an equipment either with massage or without massage function. Subjects were evaluated by using Dualenergy X-ray absorptionetry (DEXA), total body fat % (TBF), trunk fat % (TF), android fat % (AF), gynoid fat % (GF), fat mass (FM), trunk fat mass (TFM), android fat mass (AFM), gynoid fat mass (GFM), fat free mass (FFM), total lean mass (LM), trunk lean mass (TLM), android lean mass (ALM), gynoid lean mass (GLM), and circumference measurement from waist-hip ratio (WHR). Only EX group had an improvement in reductions of %TBF (p= .046) after 6-week. There was also a significant interaction effect on %AF(p = .05). In addition, Only EX group had an improvement in increase of TLM (p= .026). There was also significant interaction effects on both FFM and ALM (p = .021). Therefore, the treatment using a newly developed equipment may be effective in decreasing the regional fat values (% and mass of android region fat) of obese females.
