The primary aim of this paper is to investigate what semantic level of lexical items is closely related to the process of grammaticalization. It is argued that the semantic generality and use frequency of lexical items have a strong probability for entering grammaticalization processes. This paper shows that basic level terms in the semantic field have generalized meanings, are neutralized in some constructions and appear more frequently than peripheral ones. This paper also deals with the correlations between the basic-level category and grammaticalization by means of analyzing the semantic levels of ingestion verbs in Korean and English. This paper consists of four parts and is organized as follows: part 1 presents the goal of the study. Part 2 describes semantic levels of lexical words in terms of the principle of categorization by Rosch (1978) and Berlin & Kay (1970) and deals with it from a grammaticalization perspective. Part 3 discusses the interaction of basic-level words and grammaticalization by means of comparing Korean ingestion verb mekta and English ingestion verb eat. Part 4 summarizes and concludes the findings discussed in the paper.
