The memory of the 1905 Convention has been changed. Around 1910, it was remembered as an evidence showing the incapability of Korean people as well as an entrance into the loss of sovereignty. During the Japanese occupation, it was regarded not only as an important moment of Korea’s degeneration into Japan’s colony, but also as a turning point which invoked the student strikes, the suicides of Young-whan Min and others, the ‘Righteous Armies’ of Ik-hyeon Choi, Jong-sik Min and others. The memories from 1945 to 1970s can be classified into three types. The first type stressed Japan’s outrage, coercion, and threat against Korean government. The second one stressed the incapability and lack of sense of responsibility of the ruling class. The third one stressed incapability and helplessness of the Korean nation as a whole. But, since 1980s the memory type which laid the blame on the side of Korean nation almost disappeared. Instead, Japan’s armed threat and coercion have been blamed. At the same time, the 1905 Convention was generally remembered as an momentum of Korean national movement against Japanese rule. Furthermore, recent studies from the view of international law reveals that the 1905 Convention was invalid.
Meanwhile, Wan-yong Lee and Young-whan Min were symbolized as an ‘traitor’ and a ‘patriot’ respectively. Nevertheless, several facts have been buried in oblivion in relation to the 1905 Convention: the ambiguous attitude of Emperor Gojong, the supreme ruler, before and after the conclusion of the 1905 Convention, the diverse politic behavior of the Korean officials which could not be identified in the dichotomy between traitor and patriot, the acts of many traitors except Wan-yong Lee, the fact that the 1905 Convention brought into completion the East Asian imperialist structure around Japan.
