The purpose of this study was to examine to what extent the gender, school year and school grades of children who learned taekwondo were related to their degree of training(grade of belt) and how much their taekwondo training was tied into their personality including patience, attention, confidence, manners and self-esteem.
The subjects in this study were boy and girl children who were in their third to sixth years of elementary school in Seoul. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with SPSS program, and t-test, one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA were carried out.
The findings of the study were as follows:
1. As for the impact of taekwondo training on personality development, the taekwondo trainees were ahead of the others who weren't in terms of personality development.
2. Their personality development was in proportion to the extent of taekwondo training(grade of belt).
3. Concerning connections between general characteristics and personality development among the trainees, the boy children excelled the girls in personality development, and those who were in the higher grades and got better school grades were better than their counterparts.
4. Regarding the relationship of taekwondo training to gender, school year and academic performance, there was interaction effect between the extent of taekwondo training and gender, and between the extent of taekwondo training and school year.
