In this study, we first inspected the necessities and objectives of Taekwondo practice in the way to figure out its roles and functions in the character education for the children and youth of multicultural families, and then on the basis of them, we tried to investigate the training direction and matters need of attention when the martial art is to be taught to the students of multicultural families. In order to achieve the objective of the study, we used a qualitative research method of in-depth interview. Following are the implications derived from the research on the necessity and objectives of Taekwondo practice for the children and youth of multicultural families: First, Taekwondo practice should be incorporated as an activity program into the school curriculum. Second, Taekwondo practice should be incorporated as a specialty physical education into the school’s official physical education curriculum. Third, Taekwondo practice should be used as a means of teaching Korea’s etiquette lessons. Fourth, Taekwondo practice should include activities for the identity establishment and character growth. Fifth, Taekwondo practice should play a role as a medium for understanding Korean culture.
Consequently, on the basis of these results, we suggest following Taekwondo teaching direction for the instructors of those from multicultural background: First, etiquette lessons should be learned through experience in the relationship between the instructor and the trainee. Second, Taekwondo practice programs should involve and teach Korean culture. Third, the meditation and character education program in Taekwondo practice programs should be suggested in a concrete way. Fourth, in order to expand communication with the trainee in the boundaries of school curriculum, the approaches to the instruction should vary in accordance with the ages and the school grades. Fifth, the programs should be based on the root of Taekwondo practice and technical system thereof. Taekwondo is a martial art which is internationally practiced in 206 countries. In order to enlarge and develop the values that Taekwondo bears, the Taekwondo practice environment of Korea, the originated country of the martial art, need to be changed. Therefore, there exists a high need for further studies that verifies the effects of Taekwondo practice on various subjects.
