The purpose of this study was to investigate levels of satisfaction in physical education classes perceived by business high school students. To this end, 180 students selected from two schools out of several boys'business high schools located in Jung-gu and Gangbuk-gu, Seoul participated in a survey. The actual number of the survey sets used for analysis, however, was 144 due to part of the entire surveys collected (180 units) being incomplete with answers and/or missing some of the answers.
The data were then analyzed using the SPSS 14.0 for Windows program and yielded the following conclusions: (a) There were no significant differences found in the perceived levels of satisfaction in physical education classes by year or grade; (b) emotional satisfaction in the classes by preference resulted in significant differences in the students'perceived levels of satisfaction, with particular differences shown between a group with a high level of preference and a group with a mid or low level ofpreference; (c) significant differences by different levels of preference were demonstrated in social satisfaction, with a group with a high level of preference and a group with a mid or low level of preference resulting in significant differences in their perceived satisfaction levels; (d) there were no significant differences found in the students'emotional satisfaction by differing levels of initiative; and (e) social satisfaction by different levels of initiative yielded significant differences, with a group with a high level of initiative being significantly different from a group with a mid or low level of initiative.
Several suggestions were made based on the above-stated conclusions. First, a student's perception of a physical education class serves as a crucial factor that may increase satisfaction in the class perceived by the student, which brings all possible factors likely to enhance the perception to our attention.Second, in order to avoid a "dull, unified"physical education class, educators and policy makers concerned must have interest in and develop PE programs that will successfully blend high school students' sub-culture with their physical activities. Such programs would have to be designed based on a broad and receptive perspective on the students' peer culture. Third, further studies are recommended to investigate the relatedness between the subjects' peer culture, PE classes, and physical activities. Lastly, more multidisciplinary and multifaceted research should be conducted as to how customized or individualized PE classes based on inputs from disciplines including sports psychology, sports dietetics and exercise prescription can affect students' perceived satisfaction in PE classes and reinvigorate PE programs.
