Globalization is a complex term that means a lot of things, but one of the most overlooked aspects is the increased migration of people across national boundaries. As in other parts of the world, international migration in Asia is an important social issue since most countries in the region are affected by temporary labor migration as either labor-exporting or labor-importing countries. Currently, there are reportedly more than 500,000 foreigners residing in South Korea, with transnational migrant workers accounting for more than a half of the total. Although the country’s reliance on imported foreign labor is likely to continue unabated, the country prides itself as an ethnically homogenous society and insists on almost zero-immigration policy. However, this paper argues that Korean society is destined to make a transition from a mono-racial society to a multiracial and multiethnic society in the near future and that this process is irreversible. In support of this argument, the paper examines various social factors that will usher in the making of a multiethnic Korean society, including the continuing influx of foreign workers, the country’s record-low fertility rate, shortage of brides, and rapid aging of the population. The paper then argues that the Koreans’ low receptivity to foreigners is based on the ideology of ethnic homogeneity (“one ancestor myth”), cultural uniqueness, and linguistic homogeneity.
