With the automotive industry develops rapidly, more and more vehicles have been producing, and they are polluting our living environment. Emission standards are being continually constituted to protect our living environment. Besides, for a time the price of crude oil reached to 80 US dollars per barrel. Improving tradition combustion process and finding an alternative fuel are the dominant target for future internal combustion engine. From 1970s many automotive manufacturers have developed many novel engines, such as Honda CVCC, Audi GDI engine and HCCI (being on the research stage). On the other hand, CNG (compression natural gas) is promising alternative fuel for automotive engine to meet the high efficiency and low emission requirements. The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Rl-CNG engine. As one of Rl series engines’ researches, RI-CNG engine is set up based on lots of former studies, such as the CVC study and Rl gasoline engine study etc.. Based on these series studies, a single-cylinder direct injection diesel engine was modified into conceptual RI-CNG engine. An optimized sub-chamber was employed. All parameters of the sub-chamber were derived from former studies. Compared with Rl gasoline engine, RI-CNG engine has solved its fatal demerit, i.e. Rl-gasoline engine can’t scavenge the residual gas in the sub-chamber. But Rl-CNG engine was fueled to sub-chamber directly instead manifold fuel supply. By this way Rl-CNG engine can improve combustion stability. Besides, exhaust gas characteristics of Rl-CNG engine were investigated.
