The aesthetic modernity of Korean literary coterie magazines in early 1920’s has hybridity. The linguistic form of this hybridity in Korean literature is the sublime. But it had been expressed not by general way but by nationalist way which was dependent on “a divine upstream”, Korean nationalist myth. So the aesthetic modernity of 1920’s in Korea come from the opposite direction of aesthetic modernity in Europe.
The hybridity of aesthetic modernity in Korea, mixed with the sublime, has two meanings. Firstly it is related to the limit of heteronomous modernity. Korean modernity is a particular modernity forced by Japanese imperialism. So the aesthetic modernity in Korean literature has a tendency to anti-imperialism and anti-Japan.
Secondly it is related to severance and connection, hybridity which founded in the sublime. According to Yeom Sang-seob’s declaration, 1920’s coterie tried to build new beginning point in Korean literature. But it was not mean a absolute discontinuity from Korean cultural heritage. So it is a renaissance rather than a discontinuity.
