The debate between Modernity and Post-Modernity. which happened during the latter part of the last century, broke our trust in reason. progress, and scientific world-view and provided a new knowledge horizon of history and human through various theoretical guidance. The debate on Modernity. especially debate on how to understand Post-Modernity in the area of literature. brought numerous dispute in the domestical academic society. At the age of new paradigm, century of sensibility and consumption rather than century of theory and ideology. this paper re-examined the issue of Modernity: last century's debate that nobody seems to remember today.
In this context. this paper reviewed the eurocentristic nature of Modernity from its theoretical starting point, Latin America. The questions addressed in this paper are as follows: What kind of role is Latin America playing in the establishment of Modernity? On what kind of mechanism is 'coloniality of power' operating in the colonial reign of Latin America? Finally. what kind of truth is a myth of Europe functioning as a core unit of Modernity hiding?
Examining the role of Latin America in relation with Modernity debate can show that even Post- Modernity itself. which tries to point out and overcome the limitations of Modernity, is operating within the Eurorentristic framework in a way. Especially. examining how the logic of Modernity is operating inside of Latin America. where western Modernity formed its direct physical basis. will be able to provide some suggestions in relation to our situation.
At the age of globalization. taking Modernity as an issue and reviewing the geopolitical position of Latin America in this matter can also play a very important role in understanding Latin American culture. In other words, without understanding the logic of how Modernity operates in Latin America, it is practically impossible to build the theoretical basis that can overcome the hegemony of neoliberalism or globalization which is the most modem and powerful form of Modernity.
Through this process, this paper expanded the context of Modernity debate, reorganized the Latin American culturethrough Modernity debate in Latin America, and explored the theoretical foundation which can be used for a new interpretation of Modernity.
