The purpose of this study is to identify the historical value of excavated remains from three tombs of the Choi family originated Jeonju in Mungyeong. The study provides us an understanding the costume culture of Mungyeong area and the customs of the funeral ritual during the late 16th century. The following is a summary of this study.
First, a total of 65 remains were found in the three tombs: 26 were from the tomb of Jin Choi(husband), 34 were from his wife's tomb, and 5 were from the unidentified tomb. The remains are typical clothes and shroud of the late 16th century.
Second, the Jockduri, woman's headgear, and the Jungchimak, man's coat, of the 16th century style were newly excavated from the tomb of Jin Choi's wife and the socks from Jin Choi's tomb shows a new method to keep new socks.
Third, most of the remains from the three tombs are made of cottons and some of the cottons is identified as the huckerback weaving.
Forth, a coffin cover was found in the unidentified tomb and the seal mark on the cover is illegible. When there is a seal mark on a cloth, there are three cases of implications by the seal; 1) the seal mark is the authentication of a money, 2) the seal is to be used as an amulet, or 3) the seal is to be used as an identification of the craftsman or the brand.
