For 500 years, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty that embedded Confucianism as its national ideology and taking importance of tradition were formed through identical systems that took basis on the system of the ancient statute of Song Dynasty and the Koryo Dynasty. Based on the icons and amount of stone men and stone animals of Koryo’s Hyeonjeongreung, stone horses have been added depending on the imperial tombs of the Northern Song that newly reorganized the royal tomb system creating a new form and icon of stone men and stone animals of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Stone men and stone animals of early Joseon Dynasty followed the style of Koryo’s Hyeonjeongreung, succeeding realistic expressions, with depiction of the proportions of the body being detailed and delicate. With the compilation of 『The Annals of King Sejong(世宗實錄)』 「Five Rites(五禮)」 and 『The National Five Rites(國朝五禮儀)』, these became the prototype for later tombs, and the style and form for stone statues were established, succeeding in later years. Starting from the late Sejong era to the Yeonsan era, royal tombs carry on the realistic expressions with elegant body forms and naturally detailed depiction seen in the first phase. At the same time, Hyeonreumg, Changreung and Seungreung have also shown distinct expressions showing a variety of styles of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. The autonomous ritual institution of the royal tombs faced changes with the importing of 『The Collected Codes of Great Ming(大明會典)』 from China in the Joongjong year 13(1518). These kind of changes were reflected in the stone men and stone animals of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. These styles have never been seen in the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty before, and have been found in stone images of military officials from the imperial tombs of the Ming Dynasty and in the clothing and armor of military officials in wall paintings.
Stone men and stone animals of stone statues in the royal tombs of the first half of the Joseon Dynasty represent and reflect a country’s principle and ideology in governing, literature, legislations, international politics was another form of royal art. Therefore, for the late King that will be living the royal tomb in his after life, stone men and stone animals were produced under strict rule and planning of the royal tradition. As a form of royal art, stone statues reflected the phases of time of a particular period, and the art historical meaning of the statues is great.
