In this article, I discuss Not Ⅰ as a play that dramatizes the resistance to the order of symbolic which engenders all subjects, who are ones of desire. Taking into account the Lacanian ethics of psychoanalysis, I stress mouth's refusal to say the first person pronoun 'I' as a denial of the place of subject which is assigned at the expense of jouissance. With the rejection of the symbolic subject, mouth tries to escape from all the regulations of the symbolic law which is established depending on the subjugation of the subject who unwittingly surrenders his or her desire in exchange for the place of 'subject.' Through the renouncement, however, mouth reveals the fact that the symbolic can be sustained only by means of the very desire of subject. On the one hand, setting limit to the freedom of subject in the name of law, moral, and commandments of religion, the symbolic induces a subject to desire something beyond the limit that is believed to satisfy the lack. On the other hand, the symbolic causes a sense of guilt from the subject who desires the forbidden by law, (ab)using the authority and justice of the laws which prohibits the subject from access to the beyond. In this way, the symbolic tries to keep the desire as a lack in subject and simultaneously undertakes a dominant position over the subject.
In Not Ⅰ, mouth never 'gives ground relative to its desire', nor accept the ruling of the symbolic law. Rather, mouth transgresses the realm of the symbolic throwing away every signs to represent herself or itself, also breaking down the chain of signification into the debris of fragmented signifier. All these acts bring mouth or her to the place of thing or hole of the real which can not be signified nor signifies anything. The ethical value in the transgression of mouth emerges at the border of the symbolic and the real where the complete realization of desire which paradoxically refers to disillusionment with the essence of desire can be possible. The painful traverse of fantasy liberates a subject from both the internal and external censorship. That freedom of subject obtained through the recognition provides a subject with ethical dimension having nothing to do with oppression, sense of guilt and obligation.
