Samuel Beckett's Not I, which embodies his minimal theater, offers another shocking stage with Mouth and Auditor. Mouth's life is marginal outside the boundaries of normal living patterns. The absence of her life is represented with the fragmented body, Mouth. Constantly moving Mouth remains as a strong image for the viewer. The effect is of the most extreme rejection of presence in time and in body by the voice, but paradoxically for the viewer of an almost unbearable presence of suffering and immediacy of the physical.
Some critics indicate the image of Mouth reminds the viewer of a woman's whole body and they feel voyeuristic while watching Mouth on the stage. From the feministic viewpoint, this results from Phallocentrism which recognizes a woman as an object through the gaze. Beckett juxtaposes the image of Mouth with the words which are related with the body and offers the augmented dramatic effect.
In Lacan, language acquisition begins with entering the Symbolic. Language, the Symbolic order, is the Order of the Father. Mouth cannot represent her instinctive desire to express with the phallocentric language and rejects it. Mouth is looking for her own existence, which was thought negative and marginal. She chooses her own way to express, such as ungrammatical words, repetition, ellipses, laughter and scream. Mouth cannot accept the conception of 'I' which is contaminated by phallocentrism and her speech seems to refuse the romanticism of identity. Through feminine writing/speaking, Mouth, a model of lack and absence, finally acquires presence.
