This paper aims to explore the Lacanian conception of woman's body, differentiating it from Butler's based on Foucauldian discourse theory. Lacan sees human body as being neither biologically given nor socially constructed but as a surplus which cannot be contained in the Symbolic order, though it is constructed when a human enters the Symbolic order. The lacanian notion of the Real indicates the remainder of the Symbolic or the return of the repressed in the Symbolic. Human body is Real. It is not wholly subject to symbolization, as Foucault and Butler think, but disruptive of and resistant to it.
Unlike Butler, who erases the category of sex, arguing that sex is not biologically given but always already socially constructed, Lacan keeps the categories of sex and sexual difference. Lacanian conception of sex and sexual difference signifies not so much the sexual "identity," the so-called masculinity or femininity that the Symbolic confers on the subject as the "failure" of that very identity, through which the unconscious sexuality erupts. Sexual difference indicates one's relation to the failure of the Symbolic which is neutral but sexually divided. Lacan's sexuation formula shows two different ways, either male or female, in which the Symbolic fails. The made way, not in the sense of biology but of the structural position one takes, is the one in which one has a relation to an "exception," which is not subject to the phallic function, while female way is the one in which one has a relation to the "impossibility" of the phallic function. Female ethics, represented by Antigone, is accomplished through this relation to the impossibility of the phallic function, which means that "Woman" has a direct encounter with the Real without developing a fantasy for it, as "Man" often does.
