This thesis aims to analyse the characteristics of “Cheoyong” mask and demonstrates how it had been transmitted. The result of this study is as follows:
1) The mask is very significant in “Cheoyong” tradition-like dance, lyrics, tale, forklore, etc. “red cheek” “flowers in hat” “white teeth” are the symbol of “Cheoyong” himself.
2) The mask had changed its appearance. At first, it was very threatening like an ogre, but it changed to generous face and it changed again to very funny face. We can find these three faces in mask of “Cheoyong”.
3) The reason why the face of “Cheoyong” had changed is related the fact thar the situations of “Cheoyong” song/dance had changed from Silla dynasty to Yi dynasty. In Silla dynasty, “Cheoyoog” song/dance was the magic in an exorcism In Koryo dynasty, “Cheoyong” song/dance was the spectacular show as well as the magic in royal palace. In early Yi dynasty, “Cheoyong” song/dance was chinese style ritual of driving off the evil of measles, royal festival and show for pleasure. So its various function effected its appearance.
The former studies of “Cheoyong” mask had focused its various meaning, not interested in its historical aspects or its transformation. This study may be meaningful since it is the first attempt to examine the characteristics and transmission of the mask on the historical aspects.
