Most of the researches on cloths have focused on it’s form, a special feature of material and transforming process. But cloths have a symbolic significance and meaning in people’s daily life. This study focus on the symbolic meaning of Do-po in Andong(안동) area and it’s nearby.
Do-po was one kinds of men’s overcoats in the Chos?n Dynasty period. At the end close of the Chos?n Dynasty, the government makes a radical reform in dress and its ornament(복식ㆍ服飾). Many of men’s overcoats have been slowly ebbing away in this reform. After this reform, men’s overcoat has been Durumagi(두루마기) the one and only, and Do-po got possession of role of Confucianism’s ritual cloths.
The purpose of this study is to finds (1) symbolic meaning of Do-po in modern times of Korea and (2) relation between Do-po and adults(men&women) in the traditional rites and a mode of living of yangban(양반, two upper classes of old Korea).
The followings are the main results of this study. (1) Do-po shows man’s place in social life and his position in his family. (2) Do-po set a standard for man about his majority or a minor in a noble family(반가ㆍ班家), in which man have a position of hierarchy (3) Woman in a noble family play an important role in a sewing. Do-po shows woman’s sewing skill, affiliation, hierarchy in husband’s home and economical situation of maiden home.
