The aspect of use of dwelling space as cultural space for serving tea can be divided into two categories: universality and specificity. The aspect of universality means that the dwelling space is to be used as of a space for performing general process in order to enjoy and appreciate tea cultures such as, Making Tea (Jeda in Korean), Drinking Tea (Eumda in Korean), and Storing Tea (Jangda), while looking at it in the aspect of specificity, it is that the dwelling space is being used as training room of tea culture and/or etiquette, also for tea productions purposes.
When using dwelling space as cultural space for serving and drinking tea, the aspect of using it according to each case is different because it is not occurred in compliance with a consistent rule. When making green tea, it will be required a large space, so that most of tea preparations are done in the living room When making fermented tea, however, spaces such as living room, kitchen, and veranda have been used. As storing place for tea, mostly cupboard in kitchen or closet in the living room are being used, however, recently the tendency is that there are increased number of people who use an exclusive refrigerator for tea.
There is a case in that whole dwelling space is being used as a space for tea culture. A room is used for education of tea arts and a part of kitchen is used as a working space for painting of serving tea (Dahwa in Korean), and the water fountain or well as of a place for natural dying, and the court yard as of a place for preparing tea, so chen whole place in home is being used as the place for exhibition of tea utensils.
Also, there is a case that terrace of the 2nd floor is being used as a production space for making tea. The space is not large enough, however, assembly lines have been shortened by arranging and placing tea utensils effectively, so that this space is used as an efficient tea production area.
Such a tea cultural space has not designed only for exclusive purpose, but it is also a space selected among the dwelling spaces in order to use it according to purposes depending upon own convenience sake. The reason that such an alternative has become possible is that the dwelling space in traditional Korean housing structure is changeable and it has also been designed multi-purposed.
