This paper examines multi-relationships between myth and history in Japan. When the theme of myth and history is concerned, Japanese people do not separate between myth and history in general. However, it looks like that there is a strong tendency for them to think about Japanese identity depending on Kigi Shinwa(mythology of Kojiki and Nihonshoki) even now. Though regarding Kigi Shinwa as a kind of history itself no longer, instead of that, nowadays they like to say diverse Nihonjin-ron(discourses on Japan or Japanese culture), which contains plentiful of mythological motives. In this sense, we can say 'Japan as a Myth'. This paper will show various occasions of 'Japan as a Myth' which is related with the identity problem. Especially it reviews relationships between myth and history in the era of ancient and medieval Japan as well as early-modern or modern Japan, focusing on the way how to interpret Kigi Shinwa. As a conclusion, it argues that both myth and history have been a kind of mechanism for the finding or keeping self-identity in Japan.
