A desirable understanding of a costume could be gotten through studying the history in parallel with mutual relation with neighboring nations. On the contrary, a comparative study of costumes could throw light on the history.
Our culture of stone and bronze age as well as shamanism had been formed under the influence of the northern nomadic tribes and iron civilization was introduced from China, And yet, our ancestors had remade the foreign things into peculiar to be suitable for their feeling and circumstances.
Around the 3rd century of B.C. collective immigrants from Korea had given birth to the Yayoi culture in Japan, since then Japanese began farming and weaving for the first times.
The former of Yayoi, Jyomong era is characterized as the age of primitive gathering economy. There are too wide gab between two civilizations to say that Jyomong had been developed into Yayoi for Japanese themselves. And remains of the Yayoi era were very similar to ours. We can draw a conclusion that our advanced civilization should be transmitted to Japan.
Moreover, Buddhism, ancient tomb building technique and an etc. in the age of the Three Kingdoms had been brought to Japan in the Tumults era. That is evidenced by several relies excavated from the ancient tombs. Haniwa (an earthen doll) and mural paintings among the remains, especially, say that our ancient costume had great influence on the Japanese. Their jacket, trousers, belt, skirt and shoes as well were similar to ours.
Original Japanese dress style was a tunic style, which had been altered into Hobok style-jacket and trousers-through the influence of our costume since Yayoi era. But after Japanese had made their own costume, based on the T'ang and Korean costume.
I hope this study be made very actively. So we have to take a pride in our tradition, while we should admit Japanese culture has had its own peculiality and good points. Such a sound cultural view will be a base of a fine culture.
