Now we will look into the issues and significance of the study of ancient Korean costume, as well as fundamental paradigms and their usage in such study. The most problematic part is that the period from Neolithic age through Gojosun period has not been set apart from Sa-kuk period which followed the fall of Gojosun. This results from the fact that there has not been enough research done on this specific time period. However, as more written materials of this period are found, researches are now settling on studies on this period. Accordingly, studies on ancient Korean costumes will also have to encompass the newly-discovered information coming out of this research. Time borders in the study of Korean costume history should be drawn according to the changes in the forms and materials of costume itself, rather than simply following the time divisions generally used in history. Changes costume have not always and exactly synchronized with those in other areas in society. In studying costume, historians have generally adopted the standards established in China. In order to restore the original form of ancient Korean costume, it is essential to orchestrate various historical materials filtered by critical thinking. What is especially needed in this process is the paradigm that embraces the special environment and uniqueness of Korean people. Such paradigm should also be used in interpreting once-restored forms of costumes or historical events.
