The purpose of this research may be summarized as Through collective research of acculturation figures of Korean folklore and Christianity missionized from foreign countries, as China, America and Europe.
200 years ago in case of Catholicism, and 100 years ago in case of Protestantism, I seek to find in part of Korean how to receive Christianity for Korean valuable upgraded living and in part of Christianity how to mission, root and survive in Korea.
Korean folklore and Christianity made acculturation through 19c.-20c. in Korea history. I am elder in Protestant church from 36 years old, so I have faced sometimes many desirable acculturation, or sometimes many trouble cases contrast traditions. So as I am both Korean folklorist and christian, I worked with my experience in this paper.
1. On wine drinking and tobacco smoking
Much drinking and smoking Korean themselves produce bad results, for example ill health, lose property, lose dignity, breaking sweet home and so on... even so many Korean agree drinking and smoking make good society, human relationship, specially drinking use somewhat for health condition, worship and ceremony of rite. Even so Catholicism agree drinking and smoking in their merits, Protestantism forbid both in demerits for daily holy christian belief.
2. On ancestor worship rite
Korean traditionally keep ancestor worship in sacrificial day and festive day a year in house, or at tomb preparing food, and bowing to ancestor as son's filial duty. Christian agree these ceremonies but bowing, regarding the bowing is idol worship.
Through many adverse criticisms Korean christian made memorial ceremony with singing hymn, bible reading and sermon, without bowing to ancestor.
3. On funeral ceremony
In performing a funeral service many christian attend and worship various services in cases including the deepest regret and hope to enter Heaven.
4. On Marriage ceremony
Originally modern wedding ceremony come from western nations base on Bible. Almost Korean have modern wedding that have mixed traditional wedding in wedding place or church.
5. On Korean folk tales and Bible stories
Bible historical stories, episodes and anecdotes are similar to Korean folk tales, so we can comparative study, and it give us understanding and familiarity about Bible and christianity easily.
6. On Korean modern history and christianity.
We Korean had many historical events alike enlightenment of nation, anti-Japanese ruling, anti-communism, rearmed moral movement, promotion of democracy, establishing schools, hospitals and welfare facilities and so on... case by case christianity have worked actively as traditional strong patriotism and practise of love. Because of Korean need christianity, also christianity need Korean, many acculturation have produced from 19 c. to 20 c. now.
7. On another
The dawn service, morning service of Korean christian are harmonized Korean diligence character, and thanksgiving day harmonized Korean harvest festival, building prayer house in mountain received Korean worship style, welfare work based on Korean charity.
In conclusion, the object of this research is to understand various acculturation existing in Korean folklore in past, present, and is to influence foreign countries thar missionized from Korean christian now and future.
