As the traditional rites are based on native religious and symbolic systems, an alien religion necessarily conflicts with the traditional rites; the deeper the roots of traditional culture and religion, the larger the potential fur conflicts.
Although Buddhism, Confucianism and Shamanism had formed the base of Korean culture, Christianity was accepted and spread rapidly in this land, contributing to the modernization of Korean society. Naturally, however, it carne into conflict with Korean traditional culture and religion, resulting in disappearance of some aspects, and changes in other aspects, of the traditional culture and religion.
In this paper, the acculturation resulting from the acceptance of Christianity on Anza Island, locared south-west of the Korean Peninsula, is examined, with emphasis on the change in the manners of funeral rites and ancestor worship, which conflicted sharply with Christianity. This paper is based on clara collected from interviews with the island's residents conducted during fieldwork in March of 2003 and in February of 2004.
