The main purpose of this study is to analyse the characteristics and the factors of residential patterns of power elites in Seoul. The data set used in this study was constructed by classifying the addresses and the occupations of power elites enlisted in the source book titled as "60 Thousands Power Elites of Korea" in 1994, and the database offered as "JOINS Person Information" in 2001 by Joong-Ang Daily News Company. In addition, the data utilized in the study by Keum and Yeo(1991) was also added. The indices such as "the number of power elites per 10,000 populations", "Location Quotient(LQ)", and "Index of Segregation(I.S)" were used for the analysis of their spatial patterns based on 522 basic jurisdictions("Dong"). The results of this study can be summarized as follows :
In terms of residential location, the portion of their residence in the south of Han river has increased more in 2001 than before, which has resulted in the spatial imbalance of their residence between the southern and the northern part of the river more conspicuous. What is more, their preferred places of residence are concentrated on specific jurisdictions both in the south and in the north of the river. In contrast to the northern region, however, the boundary of such a residential concentration in the southern part is expanding gradually to adjacent areas, while the spatial concentration in specific jurisdictions becomes larger at the same time. Furthermore, although the cause of the residential segregation in terms of occupation has not been clarified in this research yet, it has been found that there is an apparent tendency of spatial segregation in accordance with their professions. Further in-depth analysis is required for the explanation of such a tendency.
