The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amenity in Suwon. On the basis of the results of amenity evaluation, the urban planning ideas were proposed. For the evaluation and comparison of the amenity condition, 16 detailed indicators based on 4 large groups were surveyed in differing living zones. The results of this study also were compared to that conducted in 1995. On the basis of score (max. 100 points) obtained in each indicator, water quality related with ponds and streams was evaluated to be lowest (25.7), whileas sunshine condition within the house was the highest (72.9). Considering scores among living zones, Seodun and Gokbanjeong zones showed the lowest score (35.0), whileas Iowon showed the highest score. The overall result of amenity condition in 1998, especially including the condition of streets and cleanness of zones, was improved relative to that in 1995. However, qualities of air and water were evaluated to become deteriorated. Suwon is a famous historical city with castles in C.B.D., but the amenity score of C.B.D. zone was not as high as it was expected (43.3). The results of this study suggest the historical environment, forest, main stream passing through the city be managed in wise strategies, in order to improve the overall amenity condition of Suwon city.
