We have built so many urban environments like housings, roads, plazas, parks and various kinds of urban facilitieslast last thirty years. The keywords were quantity and speed, I think. However the user's needs were ignored in designing and planning our urban environments. Now, we are seeking for the places for psychological relax and satisfactation. The quality of life is the important theme to us. The purpose of this study is to know what is the amenity and to investigate the reason for rarely having amenity in urban area in Korea. First, the main concepts, categories, characteristics of amenity were studied through literature survey. Second, Factor Analysis is used to analyze the results of the questionaries. Third, the components of amenity in urban area are formulated based on the results of statistical analysis and the field survey. The numbers of checklist were twenty five. Foruth, the results of field survey had been changed to attribute data and analyzed by GIS programm, PC Arc/Info after connecting to geographic data. The main conclusion is summrized in three points. First, users regarded that amenity was composed of openness, access, beauty, convenience in urban area. Second, most public spaces are privatized by land owners. The methods of privatization are difficult ground floor level access fences defcorated with some trees, illegal parking. etc. Third, most user didn't know the public right that some kinds of spaces were open to public. Fourth, some incentives are not effective.
