This study examines the story writings(forms) and the writer’s intentions(contents) in the parody of 「The Tongue-cut Sparrow」 among 『Ottogizoshi』.
Dazai employed the self-reflectional narrative mode when he parodied it. The characteristics of the form in the work are the composition(the introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion), the structure of narration which was transformed from the original story, and the device that many narrators describe the story.
The author put his affection and ideal land in wartime into the each character and the painting of the sparrow.
Dazai reduced the absolute and fixed antagonistic relationship of good and evil which was found in Japanese tales. Therefore, I examine the coexistence of good characters and bad characters in their relationship. The language in this parody acquires the following: the old man consistently silenced at the society’s criticism and his old wife disbelieved and criticized his behaviors. Dazai approached the tragedy resulting from lack of sincere communications between the old man and his old wife to language problem.
In human society, it is impossible that one’s express and judgement in language are accepted to others as he means. To call attention to such problem, Dazai described his wishes that people improve their relations and live together in depth.
