The aim of this paper is to examine the prototypical meanings of ‘-겠-’. It is generally considered that ‘-겠-’ has the meaning, 〔+unconfirmed confidence〕 We uses ‘-겠-’ when we are sure of the fact without the any confirmation to prove the fact. It means that ‘-겠-’ has different meaning from ‘presumption’ and ‘guess’. Also, the reason why ‘-겠-’ can be used as the past tense, not as the present tense and the future tense is that everything can be always checked on the present tense and the future tense has a property unconfirmed by itself.
This study proves that ‘-겠-’ is a class of the moods in the light of preceding studies. Also, through checking the uses of ‘-겠-’ in case of an uncertainty, ‘presumption’ and ‘intention’ which has been suggested as the uses of ‘-겠-’, it is shown that they are not the prototype of ‘-겠-’
As the previous works on ‘-겠-’ only discussed the special environment in which ‘-겠-’ can be used, they could not established a theory of the prototypical meanings which can explain the uses of ‘-겠-’ on every environment. However, this study discusses that ‘-겠-’ has the prototypical meaning which expresses the concrete mentality of human when a speaker has confidence for what he says even though he can not confirm the truth.
If we are on the right track, it is explained clearly that the prototypical meanings of ‘-겠-’ are ‘uncertainty’, ‘presumption’ and ‘intention’.
