This paper concerns how Arnold’s narrative love poem based on an Arthurian legend, Tristram and Iseult, contains in it Arnold’s philosophic stoicism grounded in rationalism beyond the traditional love-theme．The major deviation from the legend itself is Arnold’s almost prejudiced treatment of Tristram’s wife, Iseult of Brittany. In Arnold’s hand, she was uncommonly extended as a dramatic character, being idealized with her capacity of transcendental love and moral grandeur. Her love and attitude toward her husband are constantly compared with those of the other Iseult’s; and her dignified moral stance with the hectic, too human, irrational emotions of the love-couple, Tristram and Iseult of Ireland. Not just that, Arnold, unlike other writers, devoted the last, most important section solely to Iseult of Brittany and her “visionary” children. In addition, this paper argues that Arnold’s “original” creation of the Merlin/Vivian tale in the last section, also has to do with Arnold’s attitude toward the widowed Iseult and eventually with his idea of transcendental love as part of “culture.”
