The purpose of this paper is to understand Matthew Arnold"s "culture" in the context of eurocentrism and imperialism. Though he claims that the "perfect" culture was not yet achieved by any Western nations or races, he defines "culture," kultur, as the best things produced in the West, by which we can understand his "culture" to be limited in the boundary of Europe and America rather than the whole world. Moreover, the value and possibility of culture seems to be doubtful when he told the lower class and the colonized people to renunciate their social liberty and political independence.
Arnold"s pro-Irish works, such as On the Study of Celtic Literature and "The Incompatibles," are damaged by his uncompromising insistence on the power of culture to be amalgamative of the opposing classes and nations. His interests on the Irish culture and political problems seem to be past-oriented and imperialistic: while he praised the Irish culture of the past to be more valuable than the English present culture, he wanted to persuade the Irish people to remain dependent on the British Empire. In short, in the imagined community of the Arnoldian world, Ireland is a female people and a rustic nation, opposed to the male, urban, and civilized England.
