This paper reflects how the national history books of the middle & high schools in the 7th National History Curriculum describe the late period of Silla. Although it is desirable to understand the National history textbook's description about the late period of Silla(新羅下代) in progressive and synthetic way, the main contents of textbooks mentioned it as the negative period of social confusion. There arises solicitude for the possibility that the dangerous description of the National history textbook may create the equations that the concentration of power to the center-the king equals comfort, the controversy between the nobilities of Jingol(眞骨貴族) for the succession to the royal throne equals the central chaos, or the uprising of farmers and the growth of local power equals confusion.
It is necessary to conceive that the growth of local power and the uprising of farmers means the agony toward historic progress and to depict the feature of civil uprising and the leaders in progressive and positive way through the textbook's description. In order to do that, it is obligatory to show the period on the basis of understanding diversely-existing human groups' lives synthetically and systemically including the farmers in the late period of Silla. Also, the partial understanding focused on the power game and change between some of rulers should be avoided.
The description of the late period of Silla in the National history textbook is not enough to reveal the differentiation between that period and before-and-after periods of the society in spite that it defines the period as the time when the ancient age of Korean history is shifted to the middle age. The characters of the late period of Silla in the National history textbook should be filled with synthetic and systemic description including politics, economy, society, and culture.
In order to make the better textbook, people who majored in Korean history need to escape from monopolizing cognition for the textbook writing and they should cowork altogether with history education researchers and history teachers in the field instead of taking exclusive aptitude to one another. Besides, they should try to improve the describing way which has usually taken the explaining tones and to develop the various kinds of supplementary books along with the paper textbook. In that case, the contents of Korean history textbooks about the late period of Silla would be the ones where pioneers who made a new society could be depicted lively.
