While Korean scholars have consistently pointed out the problems associated with Japanese history textbooks, such distortions of history have become a seemingly annual problem since 2001. We as Koreans have now reached the stage where we must objectively ask ourselves how much longer we will have to deal with this issue. However even more important for Koreans right now is the issue of, how should we describe history in our own textbooks'. This is because in the end Korean history textbooks are much more important to us than Japanese ones.
While this paper analyzed Korean history textbooks for middle school students, a special focus was placed on the sections dealing with events that occurred during the middle ages and modern era such as Japanese marauders, the Hideyoshi Invasions of 1592, and the T´ongsinsa (通信使, Chos?n special envoy to Japan). The descriptions contained in these Korean history textbooks have for the most part been focused on the political aspects of history. Moreover, the contents of these history textbooks are not as diversified as is the case with the Japanese ones. There is also a lack of reference materials such as paintings, documents, and pictures included in these works, and the section in which activities of a more investigative sort can be undertaken is quite limited in nature. As such, these aspects of the Korean history textbooks should be improved. Generally speaking, Korean history textbooks are focused on descriptions of foreign powers encroachment on the Korean peninsula and the national resistance against these foreign powers. In this regards, there is a need to scale back the sections dealing with political history, the history of resistance against the foreign powers, and minjung history, while enhancing those concerned with our nations social and everyday history. In addition, the current Korean history textbooks are overly concentrated on the history of Korea itself. For example, the section dealing with the Mongolian invasion of Korea should include relevant materials on the Mongols, such as a picture of Kublai Khan, and a map of the Mongolian territory. The currents history textbooks are set up in such a way that the barrier between Korean and World history is too wide. As such, it is necessary to describe Korean history in a manner that connects it to trends in world history.
