The fundamental purpose of studying history is to learn the wisdom to predict the future at the same time that we learn how to live a righteous life. The purpose of studying the patriotic spirit of Mangwoodang, Kwak Jaewoo, is not an exception to this, who made an enormous contribution to the winning of Imjinwaeran. His understanding and carrying out of the philosophical thoughts of the Chunchu period led him to make statements for the sake of his country at the expense of his life. He was also a national hero who fought against the invasion of Japan as a militia leader. The lessons that he has left for posterity of the 21st century are the following:
1. He lived for a bigger cause of public benefit and was not tied by vacuous theories or by his personal interests. Today's leaders must follow his suit by learning of such historic principles.
2. His enormous wealth was accumulated through ethical principles, and he gave away all of it for the benefit of his nation. Learning from this, we must construct a society where we would strive for economic wealth through ethical principles.
3. Thoroughly familiar with the political principle, whereby one nation's domestic problems are the direct cause for other nations' invasion, Mangwoodang attributed the cause of Imjinwaeran even to his king. This is an important lesson that we must learn to delve into the various problems that we face as a nation and to come up with fundamental solutions to them.
4. Mangwoodang refused offers for royal offices and lived his life as an ordinary citizen. Today's government officials must also learn from this and know when to leave their positions, because those who purposefully refuse to do so are public enemies who betray their nation and people.
