This paper deals with the ethics of jouissance appeared in the film, Sunset Blvd. Since the New Lacanians applied psychoanalysis to the popular culture, the problems involved in the death, especially in the death drive, have been discussed as an important topic recently. The differences between Desire and Drive, the concepts of the Real, the sublime, the Thing, and repetition ?these are all related to the death, and finally to an ethics of psychoanalysis as revealed by Freud and Lacan. Discussing those problems in detail to make clear the concepts, and analyzing the film, the paper will point out the power of gaze and an image-making, and ultimately an ethics of perversion as a voice of the dead.
The Sunset Blvd is the film about a fantasy of a movie star who was once nationally famous, but now is deadly forgotten. The problem is that only she still believes in her image made by Hollywood commercial society. Her uncanny behavior comes from her narcissism in which her ego-ideal became an ego, imprisoned in the Imaginary, and behaving herself as "an objet a". The gaze of camera was so powerful that she cannot face the Real--an experience of the "little death". The tragedy comes from the murder of a man whom she employed as a writer but confused as her lover. Her lover, a dead man narrates the whole story involved her murdering and reveals the destructive power of media, commercial society. To make a speech toward the Symbolic with a voice of the dead--this is the politics of jouissance.
