August Wilson repeatedly states that the blues is one of the primary bases of his plays. The blues displays various characteristics from African culture as well as diverse African-American sentiments. Wilson employs the blues' sentiments as well as its structures in his plays.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom reveals the blues' influences in many areas such as structure, theme, sentiments, and in the focus of its main conflicts. The play dramatizes the changing atmosphere in the music industry of the 1920s. By the 1920s the blues did not belong to the blacks alone and now it was white producers who made significant decisions in the direction of albums. In the play conflict exists even among the black musicians. Ma Rainey and Levee fight over tradition and innovation in the blues. What the blues is and how it should develop are the main themes of the play. In structure, the play resembles the blues in introducing a main vocal after series of the short rendition by instruments. Blues sentiments are found in the various stories spoken by the black band members. They state the black history in their own languages as the blues has done. The blues, the center of the main conflict among the musicians, also unites them; only while playing music, does the discord between them desist. The blues penetrates the play in many ways.
August Wilson, while using the realism techniques from modem theater, also employs African-American tradition such as the slave narratives and the blues structures. According to Baker, the blues is music of "juncture" in which "where endless antinomies are mediated." Wilson, juggling with two traditions, seems to sing a true blues.
