Metrical phonology is recently divided into two major theories : metrical tree and grid. This paper is, as a series to my papers (1988, 1991, 1995, 2000,) to apply their English rhythm rule to practical speech, compare and research the merit and demerits, and grope for better one, according to the patterns and issues. At a glance, the tree theory seems to be simpler than the grid theory. The former needs QR, RA, and MP related to RR, while the latter, clashing, BA, SDA, MF, CSR, NSR, and PAR related to BM, to explain examples presented in their works. Both theories explain their examples pretty well, and assert their merits over the opponent, but some unnatural manipulations are found. In tree theory, it seems rather awkward that RR is applied for 8. good-looking lifeguard in despite of the restriction 2; RA for 13. three red shirts, 14. Farrah Fawcett-Majors seems to be inconsistent with RR, and MP for 15. overdone steak blues is too intricate; and especially QR for 21. Mississippi legislation seems ad hoc compared with 10. phonological research in which RR is applied against QR. In grid theory, the manipulation of SDA, BA, CSR, NSR is very complicated; it is unclear that clashing between steak and blues is still remained in 15. overdone steak blues; and especially PAR for 9. Japanese bamboo, 10. phonological research seems to be opportunistic and sophisiticated. It must be admitted that both of the tree and the grid theory has made remarkable progress, and further complemented research is expected.
