Although Chosun Dynasty had succeeded the flourished tea culture of Korea Dynasty, it has been developed in different way since the ruling ideologies of two dynasties were different from each other: Buddhism in Korea Dynasty but Confucism in Chosun Dynasty. However, the noble society was not restricted by the ruling ideology but sublimated tea culture as the metaphysical philosophy by combining Confucism, Buddhism, and Taoism.
There are differences between classes of the society in tea culture. First, in court, tea culture is a part of royal ceremony so it was executed in a very severe way. The royal family should wear a proper costume according to the purpose of a ceremony.
Second, nobilities enjoyed tea ceremony in more liberal way than that in the court. Outdoor tea ceremony was also frequently held with the help of servants, who drew tea.
In the case of common people, there are some records that they drank tea as a beverage and a medicine.
This paper will discuss about the costume in tea ceremony in Chosun Dynasty and try to suggest proper costume for modern tea ceremony in a extened way from Chosun. The research is mainly executed by analyzing literatures, tea paintings, folk songs, and tea poems in Chosun Dynasty. Since most of them contains records of only men's costume, it was difficult to discuss women's tea ceremony costume in detail.
In a modern tea ceremony, the person who draws tea is the host, not the drinker, who did host it in Chosun Dynasty. The form and procedure of drawing tea itself became the purpose of the ceremony and it places more weight on a costume of a drawer. Wearing a costume which can deliver the purpose and meaning of the tea ceremony as well as which is functional for drawing tea could be a way to continue the thousand years of tea culture.
