The problem of presidential selection was the most vexing issue faced by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The framers considered two ways of presidential selection, direct popular election or selection by the national legislature.
If the president was elected directly by the people the raw interests of the 13 states would be clashed, especially between large states and small states. And the delegates shared the feeling that popular choice would be ill informed in such a vast nation as the United States.
The alternative to direct popular election was selection by the national legislature. During most of the Convention, the great majority of the delegates felt that this is the only realistic option. But this mode of presidential selection was also perceived to have serious defects of undermining the independence of the president. Many delegates including lames Madison who had the strong will to defend executive prerogatives against legislature encroachments disliked allowing the president to be selected by the legislature.
After the two alternative selection schemes were considered and rejected in the Convention, the matter was handed over to the Committee on the Postponed Matters, out of which emerged "the third way," the electoral college. Most framers immediately received it as a new system of presidential selection. They perceived the electoral college as a novel invention, believing that it would protect against intrigue and corruption. Also it was an artful political compromise acceptable both to large and small states.
