In this article are two aspects of Wilhelm von Humboldt's historical thought of particular interest; his theory of historical ideas(historische Ideenlehre) by which he seeks to find a metaphysical foundation for his doctrine of individuality and discover meaning and a common basis of existence in a pluralistic world: his theory of understanding(Verstehen) through which he attempts to do justice to the irrational nature of history.
Humboldt develops his own theory of historical ideas in his famous essay "On the Task of the Writer of History(1822)". His theory of ideas involves the recognition of the basically irrational character of human history. At first glance it seems to point at a hopeless chaos of values. In fact, however, Humboldt reflects his faith that there is meaning in the midst of flux. For him the world history is inconceivable without a cosmic plan governing it. Although it is impossible for man to understand the plans of cosmic government(Weltregierung), he can intuitively gain glimpses of it through the ideas. Thus Humboldt preserves his faith that in a higher sense history is a meaningful drama.
Humboldt's theory of historical understanding presupposes that in approaching history the historian is dealing with living, not with dead matter. He stresses that to comprehend a living matter, we must see it as a totality and understand its inner essence. In means that we must understand the historical events in a larger context. The highest task of historian is to approach to the ideas which expresses themselves in concrete reality by intuitive understanding as well as rational comprehension.
