Kumkangdaedo is a new religion rising during the period under the rule of Japanese imperialism. It is a national religion that put up Dangun as the center of the nation and tried to sublimate the religious archetype latent in Korean people's subconsciousness into belief in Kunkonbumo and to wage a new religious movement for enhancing morality.
During the late Korean Empire and the period under the rule of Japanese imperialism when the national sovereignty was violated, the Dangun thought became prevalent and was partially accepted by the thoughts of numerous new religions springing up at that time. Kumkangdaedo also worshipped Dangun as the national ancestor and the spiritual central point that would heal people's sufferings and encourage them, and put forwarded national spirit more passionately and clearly than any other religions. In addition, accommodating people's wishes and desires, it approached and developed the archetype of Korean religions mentality in the process of its new religious movement.
For example, the coming of the heavenly god and the revival and sanctification of the earthly goddess through self denial and death, and the birth of life and the creation of culture through the combination of the heavenly god and the earthly goddess are the basic structure not only of Dangun myth but also of state founding myths such as Jumong myth and Hyeokgeose myth. This suggest that the doctrine and ideology of Kumkangdaedo are also imbued with the structure.
In addition, through the process of analyzing the religious ideas of Kumkangdaedo, we derived the archetypical characteristics of Korean religious mentality such as morality, humanism, harmony, practicality, familyenlightenment, sacredness, etc., expecting that these characteristics may make positive contribution to the development of Korean religious culture in the future.
